The San Francisco 49ers have acquired DL Keion White in a deal with the New England Patriots.

The 49ers traded a 2026 6th round pick for Keion White and a 2026 7th round pick from the Patriots.

New England made White an inactive on Sunday, likely to protect any trade value he had. White's snap count has decreased from over 70% in his 2024 "breakout" season down to 40% in 2025.

White was drafted in 2023 by then coach and general manager Bill Belichick. The Patriots current GM Eliot Wolf has been apart of the Patriots organization since 2020, starting as a scouting consultant, then becoming director of scouting before being promoted to "de-facto" GM in 2024. So there is a good chance Wolf did not have any influence on the draft selection of Keion White, and current HC Mike Vrabel definitely did not, as he was not with the organization. Meaning they do not have an attachment towards White, do not value the player he is, and don't have any reason to hold onto him.

So that is why New England was willing to give up White. But why did San Francisco acquire him?

Here are the current healthy DEs in the 49ers organization:

-Mykel Williams (rookie)

-Robert Beal Jr

-William Bradley-King (practice squad)

Nick Bosa is out for the season (ACL). Yetur Gross-Matos has missed the last three weeks (hamstring). Bryce Huff missed Week 8 and will miss at least one more game (hamstring). Sam Okuayinonu left Week 8 on a cart, but is listed as day-to-day (ankle).

The cherry on top is that veteran Trevis Gipson, who has been with the 49ers since August and played in 4 games this season, was just signed off the practice squad by the Carolina Panthers.

Even prior to the short-term injuries, it was suspected the 49ers were trying to trade for an EDGE rusher. Since Nick Bosa has gone down, the DL has gotten essentially no pressure. They have just four sacks in 5 games since Bosa's injury. Against the Texans in Week 8, who have arguably the worst OL in the NFL, the 49ers had 0 sacks and the DL didn't even register 10 pressures.

The 49ers have the worst pressure rate in the league when rushing four this season(27.32%).

There have been many reports of San Francisco wanting to make a trade, but both HC Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch mentioned that it must benefit the team going forward. Meaning, no rentals. No, sorry everyone, they were not trading for Trey Hendrickson, or any player who will be a free agent at the end of this season.

Keion White is on his rookie contract and is not a free agent until 2027. So this checks off several boxes for the 49ers; cheap contract, cheap trade compensation, and helps the team in 2026. John Lynch's dream, really. Now let's take a look at what White offers to the 49ers on the field.

6 feet, 5 inches. 285 pounds. 34 inch arms. 90th percentile athlete.

This is the specimen that will be in the 49ers locker room on Wednesday. And this is exactly the 49ers type. Not a scrawny DE.

Nick Bosa weighs 266. Charles Omenihu weighed 280. Jordan Willis weighed 270. Mykel Williams is 267. Sam Okuayinonu is 269. Yetur Gross-Matos is 265. The 49ers love big EDGE guys.

Keion White has not had a good 2025 season, playing just 40% of defensive snaps.

He has no sacks, no TFLs, no QB hits, 6 total tackles, and just 3 QB pressures on 76 pass rush snaps. That's a 3.9% pressure rate. That's fairly horrendous.

But Patriot fans and analysts across the NFL were screaming from the rooftops about Keion White's 2024 performance, when he posted these stats:

5 sacks, 7 TFLs, 56 total tackles, 16 QB hits, 5 pass defensed, with 47 pressures (11.81% rate).

So, what changed? For starters, the Patriots signed DT Milton Williams in free agency. They also got DT Christian Barmore back, after he missed 13 games in 2024. Due to New England having two great DTs, White has only lined up as a DT for 7 snaps this season.

In 2024, White played 98 snaps at DT and had a 17% pressure rate (when lined up between the tackles, which is typically DT). That was the best in the NFL.

It was ridiculously clear that White is at his best when rushing the passer from the interior. The 49ers have done this for years, starting with Arik Armstead (who they eventually permanently moved to the interior). Charles Omenihu did it, Nick Bosa does it, and Yetur Gross-Matos and Mykel Williams are doing it. The 49ers love having an athletic defensive lineman who typically lines up at EDGE move inside on obvious passing downs to get to the QB quicker. The Patriots have not allowed him to do what he does best this season. Yes, the 49ers will need Keion White to play off the EDGE out of necessity. But he will undoubtedly be getting lots of reps inside to rush the passer.

It will be interesting to see how the 49ers ease White into the system, considering how desperate they currently are at defensive end. But I personally love this trade for San Francisco. They move about 30 spots back in the 2026 draft and acquire a young, high upside, low risk defensive lineman that will be under contract for another season. This is exciting.

And for the rest of this season, hopefully SF can get (relatively) healthy. This could be the DL by Week 11:

Huff - Gross-Matos - White

Kalia Davis - Alfred Collins - C.J. West

Jordan Elliott - Kevin Givens

Williams - Okuayinonu

With a 3rd down pass rush of:

Huff

Williams

White

Gross-Matos

This is fun, low risk trade that makes the 49ers better going forwards. And I wouldn't fully rule out another 49ers trade, considering how little compensation they gave up to get White. The 49ers front office is always looking to get better.
